SPS District Clean Energy & Decarbonization Plan

Seattle, Washington

Charting a Zero-Carbon Future for Seattle Public Schools District.

Ecotope led a multidisciplinary team to develop a comprehensive plan for eliminating fossil fuel use across all Seattle Public Schools operations by 2040, as mandated by the school board. The work was conducted in four overlapping phases: (1) facilitation of an advisory Task Force made up of community members appointed by the board, (2) technical analyses of district facilities, fleet, and operations, (3) development of a Climate Action Plan based on Task Force recommendations and technical research, and (4) outlining actionable steps and standards to implement the plan.

Ecotope’s analyses supported the Task Force in understanding district greenhouse gas (GHG) flows and forming targeted recommendations. Based on those insights, Ecotope established scope 1 and 2 GHG boundaries, identified a starting baseline, and proposed key performance metrics to monitor progress. The final Climate Action Plan outlined decarbonization strategies for new construction, retrofit electrification priorities, and school fleet transformation, providing a clear path toward zero-carbon operations.
