Sitka Public Library Achieves Nearly $10,000 in Annual Energy Savings

What We Did and How

The Sitka (Kettleson Memorial) Public Library underwent a 4,800 SF expansion in 2016, increasing the total heated floor area by 63%. Early in the design, the team set an ambitious energy target for the project to eliminate dependence on oil while maintaining its current electrical use. Several energy saving measures were selected to accomplish this goal, focusing attention on reducing heating loads while managing the existing electric load:

    • variable refrigerant flow heat pumps
    • dedicated outdoor air system
    • heat pump water heaters
    • low-flow plumbing fixtures

After a year of occupancy, the library’s energy usage was one third of the national average. These design elements contributed to $9,500 in annual energy savings.
